I started Cotton Lake Gundogs with one goal in mind: to produce top-notch hunting dogs that also make excellent companions. I grew up an avid hunter and outdoorsman in a family with hunting dogs but it wasn't until 2014 that I got my first German Shorthair, Easton. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with the breed and about eight months later I got two more, Ivy and Izzy. I waited almost a year before going to get my most recent puppy, Oliver, a Boykin Spaniel.
I didn't get my dogs with the intention to breed them. In fact, I had every intention to have them all fixed before their first birthday, but then I saw something special. I saw the way they interacted with nature. I saw prey drives that would rival wild animals and I saw the way they quickly learned to work the wind and work with each other. It was then that I decided that pending they receive their health clearances (hips, elbows and eyes), I would stud and breed them only to other exceptional hunting dogs. Soon after deciding that I would eventually breed my own dogs, I made a commitment to be the most responsible breeder I could be. I would only breed pups that I was certain I could place in excellent homes. Because of this commitment, I will not breed my dogs every cycle or stud my males to make money.
Another key function that sets Cotton Lake Gundogs apart is our commitment to helping abandoned bird-dogs. We are active volunteers with many rescue groups including the Southeast German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue, The American Brittany Rescue and Operation Little Brown Dog. We have fostered and rehabilitated several dogs that would have faced an uncertain fate otherwise, some even heartworm positive.
Our commitment to these wonderful animals, their health and happiness is what makes us different. We do not guarantee a puppy to all people interested, even if there are available puppies. We strive to place our puppies in only the best homes.
